Suparna :I always wanted to ask you ,Rajesh,Is Mamallan your fathers name
Rajesh Mamallan :Why do you ask that dear ?
Suparna : I heard you South Indians generally carry your fathers names first alphabet as your initials
Rajesh : Oh come on,you and your knowledge on South Indians,thats only with few communities...mine is...why dont you simply refer to google
Suparna : come on show off,she retorted, Why dont you simply spell it out..(She loved that haughtiness of Rajesh )
Rajesh : well it would say,Mamallan means a great wrestler and it would also say he built..
and before Rajesh could complete Suparna could realise he belonged to the great family who built the famous...
Suparna : you are a blue blooded rascal
Both laughed at it and slowly moved towards their respective hostels. Suparna was being transferred to different city and would badly miss Rajesh's company.But she was not sure if he would miss her. Rajesh too was very fond of her and didnt know if he was in love with her.
The weekend they wanted to be in each others company, and one thing led to the other and..
Two days later Suparna was leaving and Rajesh dropped her off at the airport.
Sms ,emails were keeping them in touch & one day Suparna called up Rajesh
Suparna : Rajesh, doctor just now confirmed, I thought I should share it with you
Rajesh : You should have been careful Suparna.You know all these are complicated.
Even at his insensitive outburst Suparna was only enjoying his impulsive behaviour.
Suparna : Now Rajesh, and before she could complete,
Rajesh blurted it out : wash it off sweetheart
It was a heart wrenching silence from Suparna
After this incidence, though they were in touch , it was icy and still Suparna couldnt take her mind off him. Rajesh was married off in their traditional manner with another blue blood family.
Years rolled by, Suparna moved over to London & Rajesh had a chance to pass by it.
Suparna invited him over for a dinner.Moving up in life in just 10 years time, she had bought a mansion of a house. Rajesh was taken aback by her affluence ,which he could never imagine despite his background.
Relaxing in their sit out and catching up with old times and suddenly they found themselves relaxed,though not totally.
Rajiv, come here and introduce yourself, Suparna suddenly exclaimed
Good evening sir, I am Rajiv, after a pause, Rajiv Mamallan, said the young boy ,all of 10 years
Rajeshs' jaw dropped

I read a wiki link abt Narasimhavarman?
Thats sad that some men act as it it's easy for women to abort a child and forget abt it.

Mammalan somehow it reminds me of mammalapuram :D. . .
Nice story as always :) . . .
the affluence bit reminded me of bipasha in bachna ae haseeno... :D
good story! this one, not the movie! :)
@Fantasies of a lifetime.. Mamallan is the name behind Mamallapuram!! Narasimha Varman is called Mamallam.
Lovely tale CU.. reminded me of Kalki!!!
I have read Ponniyin Selvan and have been wanting to read Sivagamin Sabatham for a long long time.. but as I am unreasonably slow at reading Tamil and there doesn't seem to be an English translation, haven't got around to it yet. That story was about Mamallan right?
All I can hope is someday I meet Rajiv in London and we recreate the mystic of Mahabalipuram :)
Googled it - loved it - Short, crisp....and still retrospective....
yeah...cos for men it's only the PLEASURE that matters...the women hv to bear all the 'consequences'.
Keshi.
@Fantasies of a Lifetime
Welcome & thank you..Preethi has replied on my behalf!!..yes,what you say is right
TC
CU
@rayshma
Thank you rayshma ..The affluence I wanted to signify was,moving up the ladder in life despite the incident
TC
CU
@Preethi
Ponniyan selvan,sivagamiyin sabadam, Immortal stories from an immortal story writer,KALKI.. ..No,dont go for english translation even if one is available..the way Kalki weaves the story,with inter twining of Aryan ,dravidian characters,simply transports one to an era bygone..honestly one gets tempted to go back in time !!
I still remember,in my school days when during a summer holidays,I started reading Ponniyan Selvan I never went out of the house whole three weeks,to the extent my friends thought I was unwell..Needless to say only my parents knew the reason, for they had already read The story....lol

@ceedy
Thanks ceedy ..you took the pains of googling it..Recreating the magic of Mamallapuram..wow..that
would be a great piece of History..for even the current shore temple is also likely to go into the sea ,at least thats what scientists are predicting
TC
CU
@Keshi
Keshi ,finding time to visit this post for the fifth time!!!..Wow,that means this has touched a raw nerve somwhere..
Your observations are true..
TC
CU
Hi, just passed by via Renu's blog. interesting story. yes the determination of a broken heart can do wonders.
will read more
Yes. It is sad that current shore temple is likely to go into the sea.
I have been there twice once in 86 and then again on a sketching trip in 93.
Did the tsunami have any dire effect on it?
Very interesting story as always. Nice name too. Take care. Thank you for your visit.
@Balvinder Singh
Welcome & good to have you here..thanks or nice word
Tc
CU
@ceedy
Thats nice to know you were in Chennai..
Tsunami didnt have adverse effect on the Shore temple..but I understand an interesting thing happened..I believe just before Tsunami strikes anywhere,the first signs are that the Sea withdraws by several 100 metres ..Understand the same thing happened and when the sea withdrew in Mamallapuram,the temples ,which had submerged could clearly been seen...just imagine the scene..the few survivors were interviewed by archaelogical survey people...donno what was the outcome...Wonder if theres anything on Google about this ?
Wonders of nature,on one hand brings in a calamity & on the other gives a few lucky ones to witness something unimaginable

Yes - had heard about the hidden temples....but never paid attention till this post...
Thanks....now I will do the same....:)
Also now since this is nostalgic...I will skim thru my files and scan those sketches and post them :)
And the mystery of such great architecture is not possible to replicate in todays time - time, money and commercialization is more important than monuments....
I feel with change in times,commercialisation is important ,but its equally important that the finer aspects like art ,culture etc need to be cultivated ,at least among current children,otherwise life will become robotic.
tc
cu
yes it did...cos this happened to a very close friend of mine...

Yes - it was part of the study tour in the second year of architecture - Madurai, Rameshwaram, Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram and Kanyakumari.
